Have you ever heard the saying – you can judge a lot about a man by the type of jeans he wears? Whether they are slim, straight, skinny, bootleg, wide or just scruffy – the style of your jeans can definitely tell others how fashionable you are. Now don’t get me wrong – jeans have traditionally been a symbol of a casual, laid back, effortless style but times are changing and now it is typical to find yourself with more than one pair of jeans in your wardrobe to help you portray a variety of styles for different occasions. One thing remains the same about them though – they are all jeans and you want them to look their best and last their longest don’t you? So, below are a few tips to help you preserve this clothing item that you simply can’t live without.
Start off the right way
It’s not easy to replace a pair of jeans after you have grown attached to the way they fit and feel. So the best thing is to treat any pair of jeans you buy right, to ensure maximum life. Naturally when you buy new clothes the first thing you want to do is to tear off the tags, put them on and find a great party or event to go to so that you can show off your new threads. Right?… Wrong! What you will end up with is a great night, but at a severe cost! Wearing jeans before their first wash will likely result in you transforming into a very blue man (and I’m not talking about it in terms of feelings). The dye from your new jeans will typically run and stain your skin, leaving you with a unwelcomed tan of some sort. To avoid this happening, prior to their first wear you should run your new jeans through a cold wash, by themselves, without using any laundry detergent. This allows for the dye to set and prevent fading or bleeding onto other clothes. You may think to yourself that this must only happen to cheap jeans, but you just might wrong my friend. The running of the dye has no correlation to the quality of the jeans. It is just a mere property of this type of clothing.
Reduce Wear and Tear
After your first wash, you should be only washing your jeans, at most, after every other wear or whenever you get something on them that need to be washed out. If the reason you are washing them is not stain related but rather odor related – you can use a water and vinegar solution to combat smells that find their way into your jeans. If all you have is a freezer nearby, then chuck your jeans into the freezer – killing off all odor causing germs after a day or two. Now that’s what you call ‘out of the box’ thinking.
Designer jeans for men are durable, but not if they are being washed multiple times per week. Think about what would happen to the fabric if it is constantly strung through the vigorous process of washing? Remember the saying – “if it’s not broke don’t fix it…” Same rule applies here.
If this all sounds unusual or a bit extreme to you, consider that the CEO of Levi’s jeans made recent comments about never washing his own jeans!!. Now, that is extreme. I doubt most of us regular folk will ever go that far, probably because our butts are sitting on more than private jet seats or rarely used conference chairs.
Whatever your situation is, looking after this wardrobe must have, remains the same. Follow the tips above from the very beginning of your jeans purchase and you will be on the road to a very happy and long lived life with your jeans.
