If you’re one of those ” I don’t give a rats a%$* how I look” kind of guys, I’m not going to lie to you – it’s going to take a little while for you to transition from the unkempt man-child to the sophisticated business man. Good news is – it isn’t too hard, once you know how to suit up. Wearing a suit is absolutely important in your dealings with professionals, friends or just about anyone you come in contact with. Even if your social skills aren’t up to par with James Bond, you can at least get the look right – by knowing what to wear and when. That starts with knowing how men’s fashion suits are worn on different occasions.

Modern Man Wears Simplicity

For a start – keep things simple. Ditch the plaids and adopt a more muted color palette. Take out the pin-stripes and everything that you’re doing right now. You can always change up your suits once you have the basics right. Definitely go with something fitted for your body,  trim the edges and be sure to leave the bottom button on your jacket undone. Other components of a simple and clean outfit include: a soft shirt, straight tie, somewhat slim and tucked-in waist and pants that actually fit your body style – perfectly tailored with a slim mind-set. Don’t have a tailor? Get one. You can’t achieve that crisp look in a suit that you just took off the shelf. Just know it’s worth it – men’s fashion suits in the modern world can make you look confident, even if you’re introverted.

A Fit For Your Body Only

It has been said before and it will be said again; no matter what men’s fashion magazine you pick up, you will see that the editors and experts will tell you that fit is everything. If your suit doesn’t fit you well, you’ll look dumb. Make sure that you lose the extra-large sleeves and taper properly. Once again, seek the help of a tailor, or else you’re going to look sloppy. Even if you’re going into the board room, make sure that everything that you have is fitting your body properly. That means the suit should perfectly fit your shoulders, arms, waist, chest and legs. You’ll be surprised how you will feel when something fits properly and the fabric is not flowing off of you like a robe.

The Length of Your Pants Matters

When it comes to men’s fashion suits, the untrained man will want his pants to be loose, or have the cuff of their pants hit the front of the shoe and the back. You don’t want that. When you visit your tailors to get your suit done, bring a pair of dress shoes with you to get your measurements right. Make sure that the cuff (if you have one) sits above the heel of your shoes. Be sure to check that your suits are matched with a solid, polished shoe as untidy shoes can completely ruin a great suit. This is not a call for high waters, but to play around a little with the length of your pants. Again, don’t forget that it’s all about the fit.
