The first 4 years of the 60’s fashion world had little difference from the decade before – people still wore the same clothing that had been made popular in the 50’s – why wouldn’t they? The 50’s were a notable time in fashion-speak. It wasn’t until 1964 that things started to change, and this change was truly a drastic one like the world had not seen before. This change makes the 60’s fashion era extremely important not only due to the fact that it set a new standard for how clothing fashion and style were perceived and created, but also because of the noteworthy social impact stemming from this.

The first and most drastic change that was easy to notice was the fact that pants became a lot tighter. The predominant style was a lot looser in the 50’s and with this new, tighter fit –many men were initially taken by surprise. Another important part of the 60’s fashion style was the pea coat that became extremely popular for men around 1965. The London style was a very heavy influence on the fashion style of America. The rest of Europe was also being heavily influenced by the London look and bands like the Beatles sporting these new looks contributed to making it even more popular worldwide than could ever have been expected.

The late 60’s brought in an even more varied selection of styles for men and the scarf became a very common item for men to wear. In most cases, this was a very thin silk scarf that was worn in a way that resembled a tie. This brings up another interesting point about the 60’s because it seemed like this era started to create a shorter gap between the masculine and feminine looks. This means that women started to wear more clothing items that would usually be seen on men and vice-versa. This spawned a huge variety of clothing styles that would become more and more popular as time went by.

The combinations that came out of the 60’s with relation to men’s fashion really gave way to the revolutionary looks that would follow in the 70’s and this is why that era was so important. Looking back, there looks to be deliberate progression. The revolution began in the 50’s and got stronger in the late 60’s. By the time we got to the 70’s, fashion was a truly powerful industry. The TV show Mad Men has been set in the 60’s and the popularity it has achieved is bringing back that older looks.

To sum things up, the 60’s were without a doubt a very important decade for fashion and made a great, long-lasting impact on the clothing trends the world over
