It’s no secret… women’s clothes are varied in styles and design – shirts, blouses, dresses, gowns…the list goes on. Men too, have a variety of clothes to choose from though their choices are a wee bit more limited. Mens dress clothes can be a lot simpler when compared to those of our female counterparts, especially when you pick pieces that can be worn out to multiple events. A business meeting, a semi-formal event or even a casual meet up during the day. You would be surprised how much effect the addition of a simple accessory can have in changing the entire look of an outfit.
A question many men have is how to choose the most appropriate mens dress clothes all the while maintaining their own style. After all, you DON’T want to look like everyone else do you? Personal style is important! Here are a few tips to keep you looking your best no matter what the occasion:
• Sleeves: Alternate between a casual and formal look with your shirts by simply rolling your sleeves up or down. Nice and easy. But be sure to do something about the creases that occur when sleeves are rolled down. Nothing worse than a dapper shirt that’s crumpled.
• Ties: Heading off to an event that calls for a little formality? Throw on a tie. Be sure to pick one that goes well the color of your shirt though. Many men might take this for granted when coordinating mens dress clothes and end up stuffing up the entire look.
• Collar: Another important (and often forgotten about) aspect of mens dress clothes is the collar. I have seen guys iron everything on a shirt except their collars and it looks atrocious! A nicely pressed and clean collar can really make a good impression. Think about it…when you have a suit on, is your collar is still visible? Yes! So please make sure it looks as fresh as possible. When it comes to collars, you have the option of selecting between a button-down collar and a spread collar so try them on, take your time and pick one that suits your personal style the best.
• Jeans: You know how it is, jeans are so comfy. For more casual events, they work! Formal – not so much. What if you absolutely have to wear the jeans you are in to a semi-formal event? Don’t panic. First, if you are wearing a shirt be sure to tuck it in. Tucking a shirt in can have an immediate “spruce up” effect. It’s true. Also, try on a nice plain leather belt and perhaps some dressy shoes if you have them. Finish this off with a blazer. This will sort of help take eyes off your jeans and increase focus on your entire outfit.
• Vests & Sweaters: When pairing your dress shirts with either a vest or sweater, try to maintain some colour consistency as you don’t want colour clashes.
Additional to these, are the general “given” points one must take note of when selecting mens dress clothes. It is important to get sizing correct as this can really make or break your entire look. A dress shirt with a good fit not only looks better on you, it also says to people that you actually care about your appearance. That’s NOT a bad thing. Some people also buy dress shirts that complement their skin color so this is another option if you feel that way inclined.
