Suiting up is not just for those who are going into the office to battle it out with other members of the board; it is now becoming increasingly popular to suit up for less formal occasions, with a greater range of more casual styles and designs becoming available. Knowing the difference between wearing something for a high-stakes poker game and just hanging out with your beloved is a distinction you’ll have to make if you’re going to stand a chance at keeping up with fashion trends. Redefining the suit for casual men’s fashion is not easy at first glance, as men often resort to wearing whatever works in the office (i.e. business wear), but that’s all going to change.

The Jacket Comes First

Before you do anything, look at the jacket; it should fit properly and not be too loose. If you don’t have a tailor, you will need one. Whether it’s a small scale tailor down the street that you go to for a great deal or it’s someone you trust, you need someone who is going to make the clothes you purchase fit uniquely to your body. Tailoring your clothes is about more than just fashion; it’s about being confident when you walk into a room, whether for business or during social engagements. Take the jacket, slim line it and make sure it’s not dragging your shoulders down.

The Anti-Button-Down Shirt

When going casual, be careful not to always rely on the button-down shirt. Remember, redefining the suit is going to take a little bit of work, so perhaps seek out an o-neck or v-neck t-shirt with light fabric or even a polo shirt. Polo’s actually look great under a jacket – great for when you are asked to attend a smart casual or business casual event too.

Don’t Forget The Pants

This tip is going to have some contention, but it’s something that is a staple in men’s casual fashion and no matter what we say, it will always be in the minds of many. Whether you’re Justin Timberlake or David Beckham, a casual rendition of the suit will include one of two options; jeans or slacks. Regardless of which one you pick, make sure that they are not sagging, they are fitting to your form and are hemmed appropriately.

The Shoes

Casual for your feet does not always mean sneakers. Get your mind off of the boots too, and instead, go with a casual shoe option that you can walk comfortably in that doesn’t necessarily scream tuxedo. Suede works, but do not go for too much color unless your overall outfit calls for it. Loafers are a great option to consider.

When it comes down to it, casual men’s fashion  can be a fine line between looking like a slacker or a man with a certain brand of sophistication. Walking into a room and immediately catching people’s attention may not be your initial goal, but when you’re standing amidst others who do have no idea how to wear a casual suit, you’ll look like a million bucks, and secretly – that is part of the mission.
